100 best places to live in America — which one is the right fit for you?
List like the latest 100 best places to live in the USA ranking from U.S. News & World Report are bound to rankle just about everybody in one way or another.
For instance, I’d rather wrap myself in multiple puffer jackets and share a dingy studio apartment with six unwashed roommates in Chicago (which is ranked 83rd) than luxuriate in some palatial Silicon Valley spread overlooking the soulless sprawl of San Jose (No. 3).
But that’s just me.
Perhaps you’d opt for Fayetteville, Ark. (No. 5), and its affordability over the overheated market in Honolulu (ranked 46th). Of course, you’d be out of your damn mind, but, again, to each his own.
The list breaks down the 100 most populous metro areas by desirability, value, job market, quality of life and net migration. Austin, Texas, grabbed the top spot, riding high marks in desirability and jobs. San Juan, Puerto Rico, on the flip side, brings up the rear, just below the California cities of Modesto, Stockton, Bakersfield and Fresno.
Here’s the top 10:
1. Austin
2. Denver
3. San Jose, Calif.
4. Washington, D.C.
5. Fayetteville, Ark.
6. Seattle
7. Raleigh and Durham, N.C.
8. Boston
9. Des Moines, Iowa
10. Salt Lake City
“When considering a move people are concerned about finding a job in their field, earning enough to afford a home, sending their kids to good schools and feeling like a part of their community,” said Kim Castro, executive editor at U.S. News, who added that the publication’s ranking system “takes all of that into account — the metro areas that do well are the ones with strong job markets and high quality of life.”
